Duke-Xavier at the Meadowlands

Another note for next season’s men’s basketball schedule: Mike Cragg, associate athletic director and director of the Legacy Fund, told The Chronicle this morning that Duke and Xavier will square off at the Izod Center in the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. next year. The matchup between the Musketeers and Blue Devils could have been an intriguing Sweet 16 tangle in this year’s NCAA Tournament, but Duke lost in the second round to West Virginia.

On top of the game with Xavier, Duke will play in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, and, should it advance to the tournament’s semifinals, would play in Madison Square Garden. (The potential pairings and teams are not necessarily official yet, contrary to a previous report.) A home game with Georgetown is also on tap, as is a home game with Stephen Curry and Davidson. St. John’s is, again, on the schedule, which will feature several games against mid-majors and will be released in its entirety in August.

This is great. I am glad Xavier is loading up their schedule again this year. It prepared them for their Elite 8 run last year.

Congrats to Duke for agreeing to this match-up with a tough school that also graduates its players and tries to do things the right way. Xavier is now a team that is known to want deep runs in the tourney year in and year out. We’ve had a couple good games with Duke including the Elite 8 game in 2004. We hope that a great show is put on for both fans!
