Another High-Profile Recruit Interested In Duke

After wrapping up a highly successful weekend in which Duke landed three quality commitments, head coach David Cutcliffe and his Blue Devils are hoping to secure their second four-star recruit of the 2009 class.

Brennan Williams, a four-star offensive lineman ranked No. 13 in the nation by Rivals.com and a top-250 overall player, recently narrowed his list of possible schools from as many as 20 to just six. Duke is one of those remaining colleges, along with Boston College, Maryland, Michigan, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Although Williams doesn’t seem close to committing anywhere anytime soon, Duke does have at least one advantage over all the other schools–a comfortable environment. Blue Devils defensive line coach Marion Hobby was an NFL teammate of Williams’ father, Brent Williams, and has known Brennan since he was two years old.

“I’m not speaking for him but I think that he was very impressed with Duke,” Brent Williams told Rivals.com. “There’s a comfort level there with [Hobby] and Coach Cutcliffe, who we really enjoyed spending time with during the weekend of the spring game. I think he was impressed with the school.”

It’s no secret that Duke’s offense has struggled in the trenches for several years, leading to a myriad of issues such as an ineffective running attack and a consistently harassed passing game. If he decides to come to Durham, the 6-foot-5, 255-pound bruiser would no doubt make an immediate impact on the team.

Most likely, though, his decision will come down to how well Cutcliffe and his staff can convince Williams that Duke really is making a comeback.

“One of the things he’s trying to find out is how the program is going to be turned around,” Williams’ father said. “It’s been a pretty tough situation for the football program there and he’ll want to see whether or not they can turn that around. Obviously the academics are good, but he’ll want to have a good all-around experience as a student and in the football program.”

Stay tuned for more recruiting coverage throughout the summer.
